In an ongoing effort to continually improve service and reduce costs, Thames Water, the water services provider for Greater London with a population of over 8 million people, issued a tender to fit their entire fleet as well as subcontractor vehicles with fleet management tracking systems in December 2003. As a result, 140 companies responded before the R12 million project was awarded to fleet management and tracking specialists, JSE listed, DigiCore Holdings.
Carl Leadbeater, Thames Water's Operations Manager, said, "Until now, we have been able to monitor separate teams rather than our whole workforce - so this new technology will be a big step forward. As well as reducing fuel consumption, it will, in many cases, help us to reach locations faster, with obvious benefits for customer service."
This agreement is the biggest in the UK water industry, and the largest of any business sector in Europe, utilising the Vodafone GPRS infrastructure for data transmission.
As part of a major project designed to reduce the time it takes staff to arrive at the scene of bursts, leaks and other water-related work, Thames Water is installing the Ctrack vehicle tracking system in over 2,000 of its own and subcontractor fleet vehicles.
The Ctrack system is also being installed to increase productivity and shorten travelling times and will feature an alarm button, allowing staff to call for help in an emergency.
The new technology will, for the first time, permit a single member of staff to view the position of all vehicles on an electronic map.
Nick Vlok, CEO of DigiCore Holdings added, "We are delighted to be working with Thames Water and with their choice of Ctrack vehicle location technology, because the capabilities of the system far exceed the simple location of vehicles. The true power of the Ctrack is its ability to produce comprehensive information about vehicle movements which can be employed to drive down costs and improve operational effectiveness".
The Ctrack system uses satellite technology to reveal the whereabouts of each fleet vehicle to within a few metres, making it possible to send the nearest driver to any given location. The Ctrack vehicle management system allows the operator to track an entire fleet and check the precise status and location of each vehicle 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This information is presented, in real-time, on the operator's own PC using scalable digital maps, which are visible at street level. Detailed management reports and graphs, showing individual vehicle movements and performance, can also be produced for analysis and/or verification.
DigiCore's widely publicised international growth focus has again delivered rewards. DigiCore has established DigiCore UK Ltd geared to service the entire UK fleet market professionally.
