Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), a heavy mineral and sand mining operation based in Richards Bay, continuously introduces mechanisms to reduce vehicle and mobile accidents. Part of this project included the installation of Ctrack’s vehicle tracking and monitoring system, Ctrack.
Approximately three years ago, RBM began installing Ctrack on 60 of its vehicles. RBM has been so impressed with the system’s performance that, during 2003, with managing director George Deyzel as the project’s principal driver, the entire fleet, comprising 200 light delivery vehicles and buses, has been fitted with Ctrack.
James Behrmann, transport maintenance controller, comments, “Although it has been a long process, it has been a valuable one. The decision to opt for Ctrack has been justified over and over, and although our initial decision was based on speed violations alone, we now have a fantastic management tool. The company’s entire fleet is utilised on a day-to-day basis over a wide geographical area. The difference after installing Ctrack has been remarkable, with benefits that include cost savings on wear-and-tear and improved standards of driving and safety.”
RBM views Ctrack as a “Big Brother”. Behrmann explains, “With this system, we’ve managed to recover eight stolen vehicles over the past five years. As RBM is self-insured, Ctrack is a reassuring back-up - especially with the knowledge that the system can transfer from one vehicle to another when vehicle replacement is necessary.
“Further more, the drivers understand that they are being monitored and even a five percent improved awareness contributes to the overall increased safety standards. One of our aims is to ensure that our drivers’ attitude is correct and that when a vehicle is in use, it is properly managed and controlled by the company. Safety standards in the mining industry are extremely high and RBM is uncompromising in its safety drive and quest for zero injuries.”
Behrmann sings the praises of not only the system, but also of the two Ctrack staff who spent the past one-and-a-half months on site, completing the installation of the last 150 vehicles (which included fitting 10 portable units). “Denver Arumagam and Clive Pillay are to be commended. Four to five vehicles pass through their capable hands per day. Ctrack has given us an all-round excellent service that not only focuses on product, but on its customer as well.”
