The consumer market in South Africa is enormous and a cornucopia of manufacturers and suppliers feeds the ever hungry fast moving consumer goods (fmcg) sector.
One such company is Promasidor, which is behind the well known Drink-O-Pop brand, a concentrated soft drink perfect for quenching summer thirsts. Operations include the manufacture and distribution of powdered food products in the dairy, beverage and food enhancement categories to numerous countries on the African continent. Steadily growing its product reach within South Africa, a host of “cash vans” are used to ensure that the popular products make their way to far-flung rural areas (the brand’s primary target market).
Colin Sandwell is the national cash van manager responsible for overseeing the 22 drivers, coordinating routes and ensuring that monthly sales targets are met. “Each driver covers an average of 150 km per day, which equates to over 70,000 km per month. We installed tracking systems in 16 of our vehicles, and they are there to monitor the effectiveness of our routes,” he reports.
The Ctrack system was installed in six vehicles at the beginning of the year, receiving rave reviews from Promasidor: “The operating system is first-rate, and much more user-friendly than the other systems on the market,” adds Sandwell. “Not only is the global packet radio service (GPRS) system cheaper, the Ctrack system also provides more information, from which we can make better decisions.” This increased efficiency has also meant that drivers are working harder to achieve targets and, despite initial reluctance, they now maintain a positive attitude towards the comprehensive tracking system.

Sandwell concludes: “If we are ever in the position to acquire new vehicles and need tracking systems installed, we will definitely go the Ctrack route.”
